It completely depends on the type of shoot or event. Many of my shoots, including Engagements, Beloved, Families, Children, are usually about two hours long - in my experience this seems to be just the right amount of time to have a memorable experience, get the range of shots that I need, and to ensure that a shoot does not go on longer than it needs to. Other shoots, such as weddings or events, will have a predetermined timeframe.
I do not work out of a studio. Although beautiful pictures can certainly be taken in a studio, I much prefer outdoor locations for a variety of reasons: I love using natural light; I like every shoot I do to be unique; I love using the different shapes, colours, and textures that can be found outdoors; and finally, I love discovering new possibilities when shooting in different locations.
Clients will sometimes have a location in mind for a shoot (either because it is significant to them in some way, or because it is a place that they find beautiful). Other times they will ask me for suggestions, which I am happy to do.
There are many great places to shoot, and each one has its own character. I like to shoot in a different location for each shoot that I do (although this is not always possible). A few qualities that I look for is an area that is relatively quiet, has enough space to move around, and offers some unique backdrops. The location is not too important to me, since it is the people and their relationships that I am photographing, not the setting.
I have done shoots that have turned out great at pretty much every hour of the day, however I find that the best time of day is often in the early morning (shortly after sunrise) or the early evening (about 2 hours before sunset). The exact time will change based on the time of year.
My goal is always to photograph people being themselves, so I usually tell people to wear something that they feels represents them and is comfortable. Sometimes people will want a formal or a casual look, and either one is just fine - it is completely up to you. I do recommend avoiding shirts with images or logos, as these can often be distracting (unless it is significant in some way). Also, it is certainly not necessary for the people in the shoot to match with one another, however it is best if the colors/tones/patterns do not contrast too much.
I spend a lot of time with every shoot to ensure that each set of photos is perfect. The process usually takes 3 - 6 weeks.
Prices varies depending on the type of shoot I am doing. Please contact me for a quote for any type of photo shoot.
Unless a shoot requires specialized equipment, I usually show up with just my camera, a few lenses, extra memory cards, and two fully charged batteries. The majority of my shoots are done using natural light, without any additional lighting equipment.
I can certainly arrange for a hair and makeup artist for an additional fee, however outfits and transportation are not included (and often not necessary).
Nobody can control the weather, and so I try to be as flexible as possible. In the event of rain or other adverse conditions, I will work with you to choose a new date that is suitable for both of us.
